A couple of days ago i installed a new Soundblaster 128 pci into my Debian
2.2r3 system. When I rebooted the system I received the message:
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
when booting and, obviously, the system hung. After removing the card the
system again booted normally. Having looked around the Net for help, I
determined that perhaps some sound modules were not installed and so I went to
update the kernel using my source CD's. However, now my CD drive refused to
mount and I was given some message about /dev/cdrom not being a recognised
block device. So I couldn't use the CD drive when in Debian. Checking that the
CD drive wasn't faulty and after some extra poking about and a little help, it
was determined that the Soundcard was probably damaged and this has since been
returned.
However, and this is my actual problem, I panicked and re-installed everything
(after backing up) in the hope this would somehow miraculously fix all my woes.
Everything installs ok to the "make boot floppy or reboot" screen upon which
time I reboot. Again the kernel panic message above pops up and the system
hangs. I know there is a problem with the Promise controller on my ASUS A7V
motherboard, which I fix at the first "boot:" screen when installing with the
line:
linux ide0=0xa400, 0xa002 ide1=0x9800, 0x9402
where I have found out the address of the ide using "cat /proc/pci ¦ more".
My hardware is as follows:
750Mhz AMD Duron
256Mb pc133
Maxtor 20gb HD
Phillips CDRW
ASUS A7V with Promise ATA100
Please note that I have been using the system prior to this for about 4 months
and its never given me a problem.
If anyone can help with this then that would be great.
