forgive the offtopicness, and this should probably go to
debian-curiosa, but i just had to share my joy at this discovery.  as
i'm now functioning in tty mode until i can get X resized (help,
anyone???), i looked up this thread to see how to turn the bell off,
and then read the setterm man page while i was at it.

you can set the frequency in Hz as well as the length in milliseconds!
hehe.  i now have my bell programmed to a perfect (american) A, at
440:

orange:~> setterm -bfreq 440
