You're right Pontus,,guess it was my frustration. Apologies to all. I do know the riff here. Ok..once again from the top. It's potato.. video card is a tnt2 m64 (agp,32 mg) .made by pny tech. I got it from comp usa ( i hate to be forced into a position to go there)...anyways. I'm using an amd 750. Now..presently I'm putting this on a drive with 98se (20 gig quantum drive) but if I can even get to a decent install at all I'd like to replace mandrake (which is on its own drive, same box).. w/potato (or woody).. Ok..so I've tried using a pci card permedia 2 (8 mg). I've tried a number of diff bios settings..video shadowing off/on. chip caches off/on. Slow down then speed up ram timing (ddr here). PNP off/on..irq's auto/manual. There is no virus thingy with this bios. Now, I'm using the advanced method here as I like to pick my own packaging. I'm fairly hip to the dependency needs (the installer makes it real easy, it seems..lol. I've tried installing w/gnome included, and w/out... tried it with that unix desktop package and w/out. Was thinking there would be a conflict there, but never any messages to that effect. I made sure the complete x window system was included, and to not over ride any conflicts. Now, I have a rage 128 (32 mg,agp ) card I can try if the list feels this may be a solution ? I've also heard good things about the matrox products, and their support of linux? Ok..so I seem to be cool until I try to startx. I can cruise via midnight commander, visit linuxconf + a few other tasks I'm sure, just nothing that uses an x interface. Alright, I'm off to work some more on it and I'll check in later, hopefully with some good results. I'm very sorry for the novel here..I've been trying to work this out on my own for almost a month now..lol !! Thank you all..very very much. Lee .
