I had a similar problem ... maybe you need to make Windows 2000 send unecrypted passwords? AFAIK, Windows 2000 will only work with Samba using plain text passwords ... at least, that's how I made it work. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q244/6/27.ASP?VOTE=1 will tell you how to enable plain text passwords on Windows 2000.
