This reminds me in error messages on a defective machine I once tried to
install an OS on.

I never checked out what kind of problem was at hand (it's been a
machine of another working group at the institute), but it also looks
like a hardware problem to me. Possibly it is best to run some hardware
tests. Is it possible to compile a kernel on the machine (this may
indicate RAM-problems)?
