To follow up: I have found that running lilo does function in righting to mbr, even though the error message appears. Another thing is that when installing a self-compiled kernel, created with kernel-package, using dpkg -i, this message does not appear during the lilo installation phase of the kernel install. jc -- Jeff Coppock Systems Engineer Diggin' Debian Admin and User
