Hi Pat,
I had similar problem in past ... but they were caused by messed local
resolver my system wasn't able to resolve 'localhost' to IP, /etc/hosts
looks fine but it still wasn't working I gues that it was trying to ask
remote DNS server and if there isn't route to it it timeout quicky.

I had this problem with OpenLDAP 2.0.18 server with any client (gq,
cmdline ldapsearch and my own library) server didn't say anything but
tries resolve each request ... it was realy painfull to work on that
system :)

I "solved" this problem by installing pdns ... I don't suggest you to do
this, but you should try check if you haven't similar problem.
