I'm sure I didn't enter "whiptail" nor "whiptail:" in any dialog. But anyway, your answer put me back on track. dpkg-reconfigure didn't work because plex86 wasn't completely installed. In /var/cache/debconf/config.dat were two "value:"- entries which are supposed to contain the username and nothing else. However the two values contained an error message starting with "whiptail:". I deleted the entries. This enabled me to run dpkg -i plex86-kernel-2.4.20 again. Then dpkg-reconfigure was run successfully and brought up the configuration dialog for plex86 where I was able to enter the usernames for the plex86 group. This time the values in config.dat were set correctly. I don't know where this went wrong in the first place neither could I reproduce the error. It was a glitch. Thus: no bug report.
