Karsten menitoned GNOME and KDE. I'd like to point out that GNOME and
KDE are not window managers, but rather desktop environments. You
still need a window manager to go with it to manage the windows.
Personally, I like GNOME + Sawfish. Sawfish is a window manager (it
can be used by itself it you want) that is designed to be lightweight
and takes the separation between desktop and wm seriously. If you
try, for example, window maker or afterstep (both of which were
designed before desktop environments were available) you'll see that
they do things such as provide a panel/dock (whatever you want to call
it) and allow you to set the background color/image. sawfish doesn't
do either, but leaves that responsibility to GNOME. Some people have,
at times, complained about conflicts between settings -- they have
GNOME set to use one background and window maker to use a different
one, and it is a race condition to see which one is visible.
