This isn't quite what happens. bash read ~/.bashrc for non-login shells and ~/.bash_profile for login shells. Thats as far as the automatic reading goes. Typically your .bashrc or .bash_profile will source the system-wide files in /etc, but they don't have to. Also, on Debian the system-wide bashrc file is /etc/bash.bashrc. -D -- Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
