You want chat, pppd, and minicom. minicom is interactive and useful for investigating the sequence of interactions your ISP needs for dialing. Then you can use that info to configure chat. chat does the actual dialing, then pppd takes over and maintains the PPP connection. Once you get it set up I think you'll be pleased. I've had windows drop connections or have difficulty connecting quite often. The only two times linux couldn't make a connection was when I hosed by config, or my ISP was down (even a manual connection via minicom was refused). | Definitely not a winmodem!
