dpkg-reconfigure xserver-svga and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 both fails - actually my console screen fonts goes messy, and it doesn't update the screen. no "clear" or "reset" helps, I can change the console screens, but it doesn't help, there is also messy screen - I can't read anything from it. It has vertical stripe "theme" on it. Script runs in there, but I can't really answer the questions, because I can't read the questions, I even tried to just press enter, and hoping to get kind of default setup done.
With incomplete - or actually without debconf's configuration registry, I can't run "dexter". "XFree86 -configure" gives someting, and with aid of previous setup files, I have managed to get X screen to start and even load partially my windowmaker desktop - but it deadlocks. Keyboard is dead, not even capslock light toggle on/off. Mouse doesn't show up. If I have ssh'd from my LAN to that box, it also locks up (yes, it's also in console - not redirected X). xf86cfg gives exactly same lockup, but with uglier graphics and few icons, and perhaps with info box - I can only guess, I see only two rectangles, one bigger, and smaller inside it - perhaps [OK] button. Only power-cycling "helps" to clear lockup. my last working X 3.3.6 was -37 or -38 4.x hasn't worked ever, allways this same problem - I have tried it several times. So far it looks like I have to change my video-card to get X back :-( now I have Tseng Labs ET6100 compatible card (VideoLogic GrafixStar 600 pro).
