I wonder what you'd find if you looked in your current /etc/inetd.conf? What you describe is what i expected to do except my inetd.conf _has_ no lines for that stuff anymore. It's been removed. All that's there is the #:BSD: line i mentioned. I know this #: notation allows the line to be uncommented by a tool automatically so i was thinking that maybe there's another file that provides the BSD-specific services. I couldn't find anything like that, though.
