In the kernel: vga modes. Add 'vga=ask' to your /etc/lilo.conf or add add same to your boot prompt, e.g.: LILO: linux vga=ask ...once you've found a suitable mode (I usually go with 80x50 or 80x60) you can set it as your default. See lilo.conf manpage for details. For user-space SVGA tuning, see SVGATextMode. Set an appropriate default setting (80x50x9 works for me). Video card: use the framebuffer device.
