The problem was actually with the cvs build of the email client. So right now 
I'm using the cvs browser and the regular email client (the cvs browser seems 
to be faster than its cousin). I had tried both checking and unchecking the 
name and password box (I think it was on by default) to no effect. Anyway 
I've sent a bug report to bugs.debian.org.
