A bit more info. as a follow on ...with 6 fonts located by xfstt force-reload and five via xlsfonts | grep ttf ... I logged out to my graphical loggin, KDM, logged out to the command line and at someone elses suggestion /etc/init.d/kdm restart interestinly when KDM restarted and I logged into the same user, /etc/init.d/xfstt still gives 6 fonts BUT xlsfonts | grep ttf gives none !!! I had to completely re-boot to get them back, which incidently now gives me 6 fonts, its the rebooting thing I am trying to avoid !
