Have you tried cupsomatic? I had lots of similar problems getting my HP DeskJet 932C working with cups and I'm really not sure how finally got it working but I believe it was with a print fileter included in cupsomatic... You should probably also check out http://www.linuxprinting.org (I found it very helpful). HTH
