Thanx

Finally found a working mirror:

deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
 deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib
non-free
#deb ftp://debian.crosslink.net/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
#deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free
#deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian unstable main non-free contrib
#deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main non-free
contrib

after succesfully installing a large number of packages it dropped
out of the routine with this:
Preparing to replace glibc-doc 2.1.3-18 (using
.../glibc-doc_2.2.4-5_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement glibc-doc ...
Preparing to replace mc 4.5.42-11.potato.6 (using
.../archives/mc_4.5.55-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mc ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/dictd_1.5.5-4_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
