Unfortunately it did not use the new > modeline. Right; you'd need to include that mode in the Modes line for the relevant bit depth. I'm not entirely clear why you're doing this, though. You had originally said you wanted the new machine to essentially be an X terminal for an extant Solaris machine. You can just do that with any X server, regardless of platform, resolution, or bit depth (hence my suggestion earlier that you try to use a higher bit depth if your card will support it).
