It's OK to convert the current menu. However, you should first modify ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu so that, instead of: "menu.hook" it says: "/etc/X11/WindowMaker/menu.hook" wmaker itself is smart enough to look in /etc/X11/WindowMaker for the specified file, but wmakerconf isn't and will give you an empty menu unless the full path is provided.
