I downloaded libdvdcss-0.0.3 from the vlc's website, and compiled it myself--still no dvd playback. This time, I've included the strace of executing vlc in hopes someone might be able to see what's going on.
Please accept my sincere regrets if this is becoming OT. I
would rather have it working by just installing debs though,
so I figure I would give you people first crack at it.
Perhaps I should move on to debian-devel next?
