Possibilites: are you using ALSA? When the modules/scripts load and unload they may chmod the files and for some reason do it incorrectly. another place to check is /etc/apm.d/... these scripts are run when various apm events happen -- batt low, suspend, resume, etc. Hope that helps. P.S. there is also a laptop specific list at debian-laptop. All the fun of -user but just for laptop users.
