SDL was changed to avoid linking XFree86 static libraries into its shared libraries, which doesn't work on all architectures. Fixing your code should be a matter of making sure you use the sdl-config tool to get the right compiler and linker flags for SDL ('sdl-config --cflags' and 'sdl-config --libs' respectively).
