Courtesy of apt in #debian:

To set up X in woody, sarge or sid, "apt-get install discover read-edid
mdetect && dpkg --force-depends -P xserver-xfree86 && apt-get install
xserver-xfree86"

Accept all of debconf's suggested values - they should be correct.

This will auto-detect your video card, monitor settings, and mouse type,
and should leave you with a working X.
