Thanks to all for replies. No, I'm not on unstable; just testing. I
think I do remember that a new binutils was installed yesterday, but it
would have been the testing one.

I don't really know how the lockups occurred. In both cases I was
online at the time; I had Netscape running but I think I was actually on
Mutt at the time, at least on one occasion. Everything stopped working,
including the mouse. 

Where does one find the 2.4.12-ac kernels?
