This is a FAQ. The reason "From " at the beginning of a line is escaped
to ">From " is that the old mbox style uses "From " as a delimiter
between messages stored in a flat file. (note that "From " is different
from the "From:" header; it is used to indicate the envelope sender).
Probably some mail transport is escaping the From line and adding its
own From line, but this should be outside the scope of your PGP
signature. The headers of your document shouldn't be signed, because
they *will* get changed during transport. In any case, to remove this,
there's a few places to look: your MTA (i.e. exim), and any other mail
retrieval/processing tools you're using (i.e. getmail, fetchmail,
maildrop, procmail). From your description, it sounds like it's probably
fetchmail or your local MTA.

If the problem is that you're using the "clearsign" method and you have
sentences in your text that begin with "From ", you should look into an
--escape-from-lines option with your pgp client. (That's what it's
called with gpg).

To properly diagnose the problem you're having with pgp, we'll need more
info: what are you using, what are you doing, what isn't working, etc.

Search the archives for a discussion about this from about 2 weeks back.

good times,
