For added benefit, and those that like variety, my friend Jake was learning how to write shell scripts, and likes NASA's images, and realized that they name their archives in a consistent manner, and so wrote a cute little script to download a new image from there (example image at http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap980515.html) and display that on the root screen. Once run, it unlinks the file and you don't even need to keep your large collection of pictures! If you don't like the one you got, just run the script again. Or set it to cron.
