What sort of CD-ROM drive do you have? If it's a SCSI CD-ROM, or if it's an IDE CD-ROM but you're using the kernel IDE-SCSI emulation, then you need a matching SCSI generic device. Make sure the 'sg' modules is loaded, and that you have appropriate permissions on the correct /dev/sg? device.
