The current version of modutils in unstable does not work with the ieee1394 drivers from the 2.4 Linux kernels. In a good demonstration of how to maintain a stable codebase the kernel developers changed some data structures that broke things.
This means that if you need to use 1394 drivers you will have to grab the CVS tree from http://linux1394.sf.net/ and use that. Please do not file bugreports on modutils, I'll just close them immediately.
