Generally, ntpd is prefered, but there is overhead involved. When running ntpd, you always have the ntp daemon running, for example, which amounts to over 4mb's on my machine. If you're not terribly concerned with keeping your clock totally accurate, running ntpdate once a day (or so) from cron may be best.
