Check out the frame buffer stuff.  I found it to be really cool.  It
works with pretty much any video card (VESA 2.0 compliant) and
configuring X is as trivial as telling it to use the frame buffer.
You also get a cool tux logo while booting and awesome screen real
estate in the console.
