I had a very similar problem with an old pent 75 with not enough RAM to handle X. Ctrl-Alt-F(x) just gave me another X logon screen. I logged in, blindly of course, and did a 'killall xdm', then once at command line was able to remove xdm. It's likely not the debian way, but it worked. timo
