Search the archive for a thread "Gnome freezes". A couple of us had problems of sawfish hanging due to sound effects being turned on for window open/close events. I turned off gnome sounds _and_ sawfish sounds and now I'm OK. My i810 sound in the laptop either isn't configured properly or the sound driver has problems.
