...until woody gets release and you try to upgrade, at which point
things will suddenly get confused.  You're really better off
installing home-built software under /usr/local to keep dpkg happy.
(There's an off chance that you can get the source from sid and build
a Debian package under potato and have it work, but this is becoming
more unlikely in the general case as packages start depending on
features of things that are newer than the things in potato.)
