Matrox drivers in linux are very mature, and mplayer's mga_vid device gives you video quality that's (IMHO) better than what I've seen from Windows Media Player. Were I you though, I'd get something like a g400 or g400 max. These don't have the closed source driver needs that the g450 does, and so far as I know the g400 max is still the fastest of the three.
