As far as supporting nvidia, it makes no difference whether you download their tarball drivers or install the nvidia-glx-src and nvidia-kernel-src Debs, because the latter are just a packaged version of the former, and are designed to auto-download the necessary files from Nvidia's site, so as far as 'supporting' Nvidia's non-free drivers, it's the same either way. As for this notion of 'supporting' Nvidia by d/ling non-free drivers, <sarcasm> oh, yes, Nvidia's executives are just waiting with bated breath for the next batch of FTP logs so they can see how popular their drivers are.</sarcasm> > > And, from what I'm told, Nvidia would like to open their drivers > > <sarcasm> > Oh yes, that's right, because Nvidia "care" deeply about such things :P > </sarcasm> Probably not, but as a company run by (presumably) intelligent people they understand that closing their drivers is not in their best interests from a business standpoint, which is why they opened the 'nv' driver in the base X distribution. > > Regardless, I like the debs > > I like debs, I think their grrrreat however I think Nvidia's drivers are > evil. Is there anything actually preventing you from using XF86 "nv"? Well, just the fact that I like using my card's 3D capabilities. The 'nvidia' and 'nv' drivers are more or less the same, except that the former supports 3D, but consequently has to be closed-source in order to comply with Nvidia's licence with SGI for OpenGL. It's SGI that people should be griping about. -- Geoffrey M.
