This is a locale problem aggrevated by Gtk and some other libraries
which assume all fonts are 8-bit.  Helvetica is one instance I've
specifically noted, there are others as well.

The confusion I've found is between iso8859 and iso10646 font encodings.
If it's possible for you to specify your preference (almost certainly
iso8859-1) or remove other font encodings (e.g.:  iso10646), you may be
able to resolve your issue.

This problem is currently under discussion in debian-devel.
