I think I have the same problem (I have a GeForce DDR). For some reason,
xawtv doesn't probe the address properly for overlay support (not sure
if it's not trying or something with the Nvidia driver causes problems
or something else). I have found if I run
v4l-conf -f
as root when I startup X (only have to do it once each time X starts),
xawtv then works fine. I do have VESA framebuffer support in the kernel
though I have no idea if that's relevant.
