After much fooling around with my Microsoft Natural keyboard, I found the "hotkeys" package to work quite well. I've set it to start up with X, and now it sits in the background and waits for those special keys to be pressed. You can also try to assign the keys through the window manager (IceWM can do this), but this requires the keys to be mapped correctly.
