i have also tried to dpkg the latest perl-base package with similar results 
("dpkg: /home/wichert/debian/dpkg-1.6.15/main/archives.c:601:check_conflict: 
Assertion 'fixbyrm -> client data -> istobe == itb_normal' failed.")
i've been told by a lot of people that upgrading to woody gets really 
difficult because of perl and i guess i've finally hit that spot, but 
certainly there's a way around it that all the same people have found, right?
