Try looking at the .Xsession file instead. One of those (.xsession / .xinitrc) is only used by 'startx' and the other is used by startx and [xgk]dm. Check the man pages for them (I also don't remember exactly whether the 'x' in .xsession is capital or not). HTH, -D
