Working with WAV files

I’ve just downloaded a long recording of a talk from a small Olympus recorder. The sound is muffled and I’d like to see if I can make it clearer. The underlying recording is digital, and I suspect it may be of reasonably good quality   I’m running Woody (v3r1)   What packages are out there which facilitate editing?   -- David
