Mount the FAT partition and repeat the command.

Log in as your wife and enter:

cp /etc/lilo.conf /mnt/dosE

It should work in that she should be able to write to that directory.

If you still can't do it, su - root and chmod -R 777 /mnt/dosE.

Now you will be able to do it :-)
