Putting 'nobsdcomp' in /etc/ppp/options will disable BSD compression.
'nodeflate' will do likewise for 'deflate' compression, and 'nopredictor1'
will shut off predictor1 compression.

Your modem should be doing hardware compression, so shutting off all
software compression should have no impact on performance.
