If you have a winmodem as I think, take a look at http://www.linmodems.org to download the driver ltmodem 0.99. It could be installed on your notebook (after decompression) by ./build_module, then ./ltinst2 and ./autoload. It works fine on my toshiba with Lucent Winmodem Mars.
