The ALSA drivers support this nicely. I'm using
the non-Debian sources with my 2.2.15 kernel on
a SOYO Motherboard & 800MHz Duron with the VIA
chipset.
What you are actually looking for is VT82C686
sound support.
Since you are using sid, I think the Debian
packages will work fine.
