Stan, Awhile back (last november) I tried to install Oracle 8.1.6.2 on Debian 'potato' and it's true, it just won't work. Worst of it, you won't get any error messages. Oracle will link its binaries without a hitch, but whenever you'll try "startup nomount" it will just hang there. I don't know about the client-side of this, as I needed the server-side before being able to use the clients :)
Sorry if this doesn't help much. I didn't investigate much as I was rushed and then built a RH 6.1 system to get the db up and running fast.
