Did you enable anti-aliasing in KDE? Is helvetica not the only font you're missing? I noticed that with anti-aliasing turned on, I lose a lot of fonts in KDE, including helvetica and misc-fixed, which are the two I use in KDE's config. I haven't had time to solve that issue yet, so for now I'm just using KDE without anti-aliasing. Try turning anti-aliasing off and restart KDE, and see if you get the normal list of fonts back.
