Here's what I'm doing: I installed gdm, then deleted the 'S99gdm' 
symlink from /etc/rc2.d. So I boot to the command-line at runlevel 2 by
default. When I want to run X, I just use the 'init' command to go to 
runlevel 3 (# init 3), et voila! I get the gdm login that allows me to 
pick between gnome & kde. To switch back, just #init 2 from any terminal
window after saving anything in open windows.

I got this idea from a recent post to this list where someone pointed
out that Debian intends run levels to be user-defined & configurable.
