Ahh, here's the problem. I bet it is opening a console window, then terminating because you didn't login (through gdm) as root, and the terminal window closes before you can see the error message. Instead, open a gnome-terminal. In it type "su - root". It will ask for the password. Now, inside that terminal, you are root. Outside the terminal you are still you. Then type "pppconfig" and it should work much better. -D
